EVER WONDERED WHY
IPHONES HAVE THOSE UNATTRACTIVE LINES ON THE BACK? HERE’S WHY.
Apple products are
known for their simplicity as well as having an appealing look and feel to
them. The iPhone is a perfect example of this, it is designed with the perfect
blend of style, look and functions.
When Apple launched
completely redesigned iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in 2014, some huge differences
between the new phones and previous iPhones were immediately apparent. Unlike
earlier iPhones, which had panels on the back made of ceramic and glass, the case
of the newest iPhone was made entirely of aluminum and some thin, plastic-like
lines that run across the phone at the top and bottom of the device. The lines
are white on the gold and “rose gold” iPhone models, and gray on the silver and
“space gray” models.
But what is the purpose
of these plastic vertical lines? Did Apple put them just for the look or are
they the part of any circuitry? Those weird lines on the back of your iPhone
are important – and here’s the reason why.
ACCORDING TO APPLE, THESE LINES ARE PART OF THE ANTENNA AND THEY ARE RATHER IMPORTANT BECAUSE THAT’S HOW THE PHONE COMMUNICATES WITH THE NETWORK.
But, what kind of
antenna is that?
These aerials can’t be
hidden inside the handset, because the phone’s all-metal body would prevent the
escape of the radio waves, preventing the antennas sending and receiving
information. Instead, Apple decided to cover the antennas in plastic, through
which the radio waves can pass, and stick them on the outside.
Antenna’s have posed
problems for Apple before. The iPhone 4 suffered from reception problems when
users held their phone “the wrong way”. In older models, the antennas were
hidden inside the phone. But the metallic body of iPhone 6 meant that the radio
waves would not be able to escape the phone if they were hidden indoors, so
they had to put them outside.
Ironically, some
believe that the ‘widely hated‘ bands are a result of people complaining about
the poor signal strength of older models and are Apple’s attempts to extend the
antenna length.
The rather unattractive
plastic lines were a point of controversy when the phone was first unveiled.
Since many people hate the look of these lines, Apple is looking into ways to
eliminate this design feature from future iPhone models. The company filed a
patent earlier this year for a composite material that will allow radio signals
to escape.
